CHAPTER FOURTEEN

JEZ, DAY 12

Jez’s com buzzed loudly, jolting her out of a sound sleep.

Damn that Masha. Jez slapped her com, mumbled some profanity through a yawn, and said, “What do you want, you plaguer? You had me reading through your number crap all day. Can’t I even get a decent night’s sleep?”

“Which ‘plaguer’ are you referring to, Jez?” Ysbel sounded slightly amused. “You’re on the general line.”

Jez squeezed her eyes shut in a vain attempt to push the fog from her head. “Well, guess there are a few of you to choose from, then.”

“What is it?” Tanya came on next, her voice crisp and businesslike, and promising dire things to whoever or whatever was trying to make trouble.

“Lev found something.” It was Masha’s voice. “Is everyone on?”

“Tech-head?” asked Jez. “Haven’t heard from you yet.”

There was no answer.

She frowned. Usually Tae was the first to answer.

“Has anyone seen Tae today?” Lev asked, worry clear in his voice.

There was a long pause, and Jez pushed herself into a sitting position, rubbing hard at her eyes.

“I can’t get him on the private line either,” said Lev finally.

Jez stifled a groan and rolled out of her cot.

This wasn’t like tech-head, and suddenly she felt just as worried as Lev sounded. “I’ll go over and—”

“Hello?”

It was Tae.

She rolled her eyes and dropped back onto her cot

“Tae?” Lev sounded relieved. “Are you alright? What—”

“Um. Yeah. I’m fine.” Tae sounded—happy. Almost dreamy.

Jez snickered. “Hey tech-head. Tell your lover-boy hi for me.”

Tae sighed. “Jez—”

“We all know he’s there, Tae. Shall we take you off the call so you can get back to whatever you were doing?”

“We were studying.” Tae sounded annoyed.

“‘Course you were.” Jez grinned broadly. “Bet I can guess what you were studying, though.”

“We were studying chemistry,” he said, exasperation clear in his tone.

Jez snorted with laughter.

“I mean, for class!”

She laughed louder.

“Jez,” Masha broke in coldly. “When you’re quite finished—”

“Hey, no judgement here. His lover-boy’s cute. If I was Tae, I’d be studying chemistry too.”

“Jez—” Tae’s voice was strangled.

“Alright, that’s enough, you two,” grunted Ysbel, amusement clear in her voice. “I don’t think Masha called us so that we could talk about Tae’s boyfriend.”

“All I’m saying is, I haven’t seen someone so off their heads over someone for a long time. That kid definitely has a thing for our tech-head. In fact—”

“Jez.” Ysbel’s voice was flat.

Jez smirked.

“Alright. Lev, tell us what you found,” said Masha, in a tone of strained patience.

Lev’s voice was steady, but Jez could hear the hollowness behind it.

“I think I know where the records are,” he said. “But it’s going to be hard to get to, and once I’m there, I doubt I’ll be able to bring whatever I find back out. I think our best bet will be going in together.”

There was a moment’s pause. At last Masha said, “I agree with you. When were you thinking of doing this?”

“Tonight,” he said in a flat voice. “Whatever this is, it’s dangerous. We need to figure out what’s happening, and we need to do it quickly.
